aggravates hunger in Latin America, FAO said

Rising international food prices exacerbated hunger and malnutrition in Latin America and the Caribbean, which in 2010 affected 52, 5 million people, estimated the Organization of the UN Food and Agriculture (FAO) during a regional meeting on food security, as reported by AFP.

A common factor in the region is that the main obstacle to food security is access to food, which is exacerbated during times of rising prices as the current season, FAO said.

In Latin America, the population of the poor social strata goes up to 70% of its budget to buy food, reducing food security in the substrate.

"There is a structural tendency to keep prices high. Food accounts for 40% of the general price index. There is a relationship direct link between food prices, inflation and access to food, "said Fernando Soto Baquero, regional director of FAO policies.

Despite government efforts, has not been able to significantly reduce food insecurity and nutrition of vulnerable populations, he said.

FAO defines food security as physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food for all individuals.
