A total of 16 million 270 thousand Brazilians live in extreme poverty, and will benefit of a new government program, unveiled today the Minister of Development and Hunger Alleviation, Tereza Campello.
At a press conference at the headquarters of his ministry in the capital, Campello said that the identification of people living in poverty was commissioned by the government to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) for incorporation into the Brazil program without Poverty, which will be submitted soon.
A person in extreme poverty is one that has 70 reals ($ 30) per month, ie less than a dollar a day, according to parameters set by international bodies.
The minister said the study IBGE will lead Brazil's best action from want and expressed confidence that the government will be able to eradicate extreme poverty in four years.
We are not talking about a plan that will continue, but a "task force to eliminate poverty in four years, said Campello.
For his part, President of the Institute of Applied Economic Research, Marcio Pochmann, said the rate of 8.5 percent of the population in extreme poverty is not residual, it means that nearly one of every 10 Brazilians are in that condition.
IBGE president, Eduardo Pereira, said that 16 million Brazilians who live 270 000 less than a dollar a day, four million 800 thousand have a nominal monthly household income equal to zero, and most are mestizos or black.
